Offense Stays Hot in Series Opener

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ baseball team knocked out another 16 hits as they claimed a 9-5 win over Arizona Christian on Thursday night in the first of a two-game non-conference series at Surprise Stadium.

This was the eighth time in the past 11 games OUAZ (17-15) recorded double-digit hits in a game and the fifth game this season with at least 15 hits. The Spirit are now two games above .500 for just the second time in program history.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third, OUAZ put a five-spot on the board in the inning. The key blow was a 3-run home run from Nathan Tarver with two outs. The Spirit then scored four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with the final two coming on a 2-run single from Jacob Griffin.

With his third home run of the season, Tarver became the fifth player in program history to hit at least three in a single season in OUAZ history.

Griffin would add a double in the game to give him a multi-hit outing. Griffin Hagen, Juan Navarrete, and Daniel Partida each had two-hit games as well. Brian Camacho picked up a pair of RBIs with a single and a ground out.

Eight different players took the mound in the game for the Spirit. After Matthew Wilmot worked a perfect first inning, Tommy Koloski (2-1) earned the win after allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits in three innings.

All the Spirit runs came off the Arizona Christian (27-17) starter Brett Aker (8-1) as they tagged him with his first loss of the season by scoring the most runs Aker had allowed in 39 career appearances.

The teams will conclude this two-game set on Friday in Surprise Stadium at 6 p.m.
