Division Title Slips Away with Loss at ACU

GLENDALE, Ariz. – With a chance to earn a share of the GSAC East division title on Wednesday night, the OUAZ women's volleyball team came up on the wrong side of a 3-1 win by Arizona Christian to conclude conference play.

By falling 13-25, 22-25, 25-21, 23-25, OUAZ drops to 9-6 overall on the season and 7-3 in conference play. They finish one-game behind The Master's in the division race after TMU won at Life Pacific.

It was another slow start for the Spirit as they hit negative-.024 in the first set. What changed from Tuesday night's win was that they never got going on offense. Arizona Christian (5-8, 4-6 GSAC) held the Spirit to negative-.021 hitting in the fourth set and just .045 for the match.

OUAZ totaled just 39 kills for the match while committing 31 hitting errors. ACU finished with 44 kills on .102 hitting despite 11 blocks and 83 digs from the Spirit.

Kate Pestova (12) and Izze Gibbs (11) each reached double figures in kills with Avie Butsko adding eight. Sierra Dominguez posted three of the team's eight service aces. Cristal Carrizoza finished with 26 assists and Valentina Trovato had 25 digs.

The Spirit will close out the regular season on Friday when they host Wayland Baptist in Faith Arena at 6 p.m. Tickets are still available for the match at OUAZSpirit.com/tickets.
