OUAZ Closes Season in Record Fashion

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ women's volleyball team brought its season to a close with an exciting five-set win over Wayland Baptist on Friday night in Faith Arena.

Behind the 25-17, 19-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-10 victory, OUAZ ends its season at 10-6 overall. It's the second winning season in the program's history.

The Spirit offense which had carried the team all season was on full display with a program record 74 kills on a season-high .310 hitting. They recorded at least 15 kills in each of the first four sets and had 10 in the final set.

Kate Pestova set the school record with 27 kills on .385 hitting. Her 27 kills are the most by a play in the GSAC this season and tied for the most in the conference since 2015.

Izze Gibbs added a career-high 20 kills to give the Spirit two players with 20-plus kills in the same match for the first time in program history. Gibbs committed just one hitting error to finish the match hitting .432. Avie Butsko finished with 11 kills on .429 hitting.

Wayland Baptist (14-5) ended the night with 53 kills on .227 hitting after committing only nine hitting errors over the final four sets. The Pioneers held a 7-5 edge in blocks and an 11-8 advantage in service aces.

While they didn't force a ton of errors by the Pioneers, OUAZ got 87 digs in the win. Valentina Torvato led the way with 31 for her third match this season with at least 30 digs. Sierra Dominguez added 16 digs to go with 25 assists. Cristal Carrizoza had 31 assists and five aces.

With the five-set win, the Spirit ended its season 4-0 in matches that went the distance. They also finished the year with a 4-1 mark in Faith Arena.
