OUAZ Rallies for Five-Set Win at ACU

GLENDALE, Ariz. – With a postseason opportunity within reach, the OUAZ women's volleyball team overcame a 2-1 deficit to claim a five-set win at Arizona Christian on Tuesday night in Golden State Athletic Conference action.

With the 25-23, 14-25, 21-25, 25-21, 15-12 win, OUAZ (9-5, 7-2 GSAC) stayed tied atop the GSAC East division standings with The Master's – a 3-1 winner at Life Pacific on Tuesday – with one conference match to play in the regular season.

It wasn't going well offensively for the Spirit through three sets as they had committed 27 hitting errors to just seven from Arizona Christian (4-8, 3-6). OUAZ found its rhythm over the final two sets with just nine errors while posting 24 kills. They earned the win with 12 kills in the final set.

That response ended the match with the Spirit holding a 64-54 advantage in kills to help offset the .228 to .147 hitting advantage held by the Firestorm. OUAZ also made its 10-7 lead in service aces a factor with eight of those aces coming in the final three sets.

While Kate Pestova once again led the team with her 16 kills, it was the 14 kills apiece from Avie Butsko and Izze Gibbs that proved crucial for the Spirit. Butsko matched her season-high for kills while hitting .345. Gibbs also equaled her season-high for kills with a career-best nine digs.

Cristal Carrizoza finished with 36 assists and Valentina Trovato had 24 digs. The Spirit also got 13 digs from Kahea A'ea and 10 more from Hannah Poorman.

The Spirit can clinch at least a share of the division title on Wednesday night when they play at ACU to complete the season series.
