Spirit Suffer Second Straight Dual Loss

After dominating the season's first matchup in Surprise, the OUAZ women's tennis team dropped its return dual to Hope International 4-1 in Fullerton, Calif. on Friday. It marks the team's second consecutive conference defeat after a 3-0 start.

The Royals nabbed the doubles point with matching 6-2 victories in the first and third matches, though Saskia Wells and Maya Salamon were victorious 6-1 in their match. Guilia Leali defeated Samantha Paz 6-1, 6-1 to pull the dual closer for the Spirit, but HIU won two more singles matches to secure the dual victory.

Veronica Grimes won the first set of her singles matchup with Phylicia Valdez 6-4, but could only secure five of the remaining 17 points as she lost in three sets. Wells and Veronica Gallardo were leading and ties in their third sets, respectively, but were unable to finish as Grimes's defeat secured the dual for Hope International.

As of now, there are two duals remaining before the conference tournament, both home matches against Arizona Christian and William Jessup. There was a dual set for this previous Thursday against San Diego Christian, but it was canceled and there is no word on a make-up date at this time.
