Game Recap: Baseball |

Offense Shines Again as Spirit Take First Series of Conference Play

The OUAZ baseball team continued its offensive firepower on Saturday, but managed only a split of the day, but took the series in the first weekend of conference play. The 35 runs scored over the weekend are the most in a series in program history.

The Master's 12, OUAZ 9

The Mustangs came out looking to avenge its sweep the previous day, and started off with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. OUAZ cut the lead down to two with RBIs from Adrian Salazar and Elijah Celaya in the third, before taking a 6-4 lead with four runs in the top of the sixth.

The lead was short lived, as The Master's matched that total in the bottom half of the inning. The Spirit were able to tie the game in the seventh, but another four-run inning in the eighth put OUAZ behind for good. Hollins doubled to lead off the ninth, and came around to score, but that was all the Spirit could manage in its final three outs.

Hollins and Ben Lewis each had three-hit games, with each of them notching two doubles apiece and Lewis drove in two runs. Tarver also put up two RBI after slotting into the DH spot in the sixth.

Every Spirit pitcher gave up at least one earned run, except for Jeff Gehr who pitched his best appearance to date. He only gave up one hit in the inning he pitched and did not walk a batter.

OUAZ 10, The Master's 6

The two teams compiled a lot of runs for just a seven-inning game, and they did not waste any time doing so. The Spirit scored two runs in the first thanks to a Hollins RBI double, but the Mustangs answered with three in the bottom half of the inning. None of those runs were earned, and starter Anthony Quattrocchi only gave up one earned run in 5.1 innings, striking out six batters in the process.

OUAZ took the lead again with two runs in the second as Kobie Tinsley brought home both scores with a two-out single. The Spirit truly broke the game open with a six-run sixth inning, highlighted with four consecutive at-bats that resulted in an RBI single.

Gehr came into finish off the game after Quattrocchi ran into some trouble in the sixth, and while he gave up an earned run, it was another spectacular performance. This time Gehr recorded a strikeout, and only needed 21 pitches to get the final five outs of the game.

The Spirit had only four extra-base hits despite a high-hit and high-run game. Two of those came in the form of Hollins' doubles, as he recorded at least one two-base hit in every game of the series and a total of six in the four games.

Calvin Colon-Baez hit his first home run in an OUAZ uniform in the sixth to bring around Hollins, and Colon-Baez was one of six Spirit players to get an RBI. Hollins led the way with three knocked in, and Salazar, Lewis and Celaya each had one.

The Spirit will now have a week to prepare for Arizona Christian, this time in a conference series, next Friday and Saturday. All four games are scheduled to take place at Canyon View High School in Waddell, Ariz.
