Spirit Open GSAC Play with Sweep of Doubleheader

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The OUAZ baseball team opened Golden State Athletic Conference play by sweeping both games of a doubleheader at The Master's on Friday afternoon at Herwaldt Stadium. The games were the first conference games for the Spirit in 376 days.

OUAZ won the opener 11-3 before winning game two 5-3. The results have the Spirit at 12-13 overall this season and 2-0 in GSAC action.

In game one, the Spirit raced out to a 10-0 lead through five innings. They scored three runs in the second, two more in the third, and then put five on the board in the fifth inning. OUAZ had a season-high 18 hits – including five doubles – in the win as they scored in double figures for the sixth time this season.

All nine starters had at least one hit, with Jordan Hollins going 4 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. Jacob Griffin added three hits with a double and RBI. Jared Crockett drove in three runs with a pair of hits while Adrian Salazar (three hits) and Ben Lewis (two hits) also had multi-hit games.

Tanner Fallon (1-2) was the beneficiary of the scoring outburst in earning his first win of the season. He went 5.1 innings and allowed one run on four hits with five strikeouts. Kapono Rawlins kept The Master's chased any rally thoughts The Master's may have had by inducing a double play with the bases loaded to end the eighth inning.

Making sure the momentum of game one carried over, OUAZ hit a pair of home runs in the top of the first inning of game two. Lewis hit a solo shot to center with one out and then following a double from Salazar, Elijah Celaya hit a two-run homer to right-center for an early 3-0 lead.

Lewis and Salazar would add RBI hits in the seventh inning that proved crucial as they opened a 5-1 lead. Lewis finished the game with three hits while Salazar and Celaya each had two. The Spirit finished with 10 as a team, with Hollins adding a double.

Gage Johnson (5-0) threw a complete game for the win. He worked around 11 hits allowed to give up just three runs with four strikeouts.

OUAZ and TMU will close out the weekend series on Saturday with another doubleheader that starts at 11 a.m. at Herwaldt Stadium.
