Struggles with ACU Continue

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ baseball team was one out away from its first win of the season against Arizona Christian, but they couldn't hold on and suffered a 6-4 loss in 11 innings on Tuesday night at KC Royals Field 6.

OUAZ (10-13) took a 4-2 lead and a 2-run single from Calvin Colon-Baez in the bottom of the eighth inning before allowing Arizona Christian (26-13) to tie the game with three errors and two wild pitches in the top of the ninth. ACU would win the game with two runs in the top of the 11th.

The Spirit had just seven hits in the game and they struck out 22 times. All nine starters in the lineup struck out at least twice. Despite that, it was five total errors that allowed ACU to get the victory.

"Baseball is about fundamentals, execution, and being tough-minded," OUAZ head coach Tim Montez said after the loss. "Tonight, we wasted an opportunity to have some momentum heading into our first conference weekend. The game doesn't feel sorry for you so offensively you're eventually going to get tired of getting slugged in the mouth and do something about it."

Colon-Baez and Elijah Celaya each had two hits for the Spirit. Jordan Hollins had an RBI.

OUAZ used nine pitchers in the game with only Tanner Fallon and Anthony Quattrocchi throwing more than one. Robert Jesionowski (0-1) suffered the loss allowing the two runs (one earned) in the 11th inning.

Montez added, "I am looking forward to seeing how we get off the mat and respond as we head out on the road to begin conference play."

The Spirit will open GSAC play with a pair of doubleheaders at The Master's in Santa Clarita, California on Friday and Saturday.
