Spirit Bounce Back to Sweep Warriors

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Less than 24 hours after struggling to a 3-0 loss at William Jessup on Tuesday night, the OUAZ women's volleyball team responded with a sweep of its own to split the series with the Warriors on Wednesday afternoon at Warrior Arena.

With the 25-20, 25-16, 25-15 victory, OUAZ (8-5, 6-2 GSAC) kept itself in control of its path to winning the GSAC East division.

While the Spirit managed to win the first set, they again struggled to find any offense rhythm with just nine kills and .143 hitting in the set. That wasn't the case the rest of the match as OUAZ totaled 15 kills on .355 hitting in the second and 13 kills and .345 hitting in the third.

The response carried the team to a 37-23 advantage in kills with a .284 hitting efficiency for the match. William Jessup (3-7, 1-5) had just 13 kills in sets two and three combined and hit .041 in the match. The Spirit defense had just three blocks but tallied 50 digs.

OUAZ was also strong in the serving game with 14 service aces. Cristal Carrizoza set the program record with 10 of those aces to go with her 14 assists.

Kate Pestova led the team with 14 kills on .393 hitting. The GSAC leader in kills ran her double-digit kill streak to 13 consecutive matches and she added eight digs and one ace. Avie Butsko added seven kills and three blocks.

Valentina Trovato finished with 17 digs and two aces.

The Warriors got nine kills from Mary Padilla.

The Spirit is now off for nearly two weeks before opening a two-match series against Arizona Christian on March 23 in Glendale.
