Women’s Volleyball Earns Split of Season Opening Trip

The new season of OUAZ women's volleyball began 456 days after the last season with a trip to Texas to play a pair of matches. OUAZ opened the year with a 3-1 win at SAGU (Texas) on Monday before falling in four sets at Texas Wesleyan on Tuesday.
 
The Spirit lost the first set at SAGU before coming back for the 16-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-19 victory. They recorded 58 kills and hit .228 in the win. They limited SAGU to only 43 kills on .183 hitting.
 
Kate Pestova led the way for OUAZ with 19 kills in her Spirit debut. She would finish with 15 digs while adding a pair of service aces. Izze Gibbs and Chelsea Taylor added nine kills apiece. Cristal Carrizoza distributed 30 assists and Kahea A'Ea had 16 digs.
 
Tuesday's match saw the Spirit take the first set from Texas Wesleyan before falling 25-18, 21-25, 17-25, 20-25. OUAZ would total 53 kills in the loss, but they only hit .133 as the host Rams picked up 13 blocks.
 
Avie Butsko led three Spirit players in double figures with 13 kills. Brooklyn Rainer and Pestova each had 11 kills. Sierra Dominguez tallied 29 assists with A'Ea getting 26 digs.
 
With their season now underway, OUAZ gets set to host Arizona Christian on February 16 in Faith Arena.
