Spirit Rally Past ACU in Thrilling Five-Set Battle

SURPRISE, Ariz. – In a match that was nearly as close as actually possible, the OUAZ women's volleyball team overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat Arizona Christian in five sets on Tuesday night in the Golden State Athletic Conference opener at Faith Arena.

Playing at home for the first time since opening Faith Arena 473 days ago, OUAZ (2-1, 1-0 GSAC) came back to earn a 23-25, 23-25, 28-26, 25-23, 15-12 win.

The tightly contested match featured 43 ties and 20 lead changes, and the Spirit needed to fight off a pair of match points in the third set to keep their chances of a comeback alive. Once it got to the fifth set, OUAZ got out to an early 9-3 advantage before holding off a late Arizona Christian (1-3, 0-1) charge.

OUAZ edged out a 65-60 advantage in kills while hitting .204 in the win. The 65 kills are the most by the team since the 2018 season and third-most in program history. The Spirit also tallied eight service aces and they used 89 digs and 11 blocks to hold the Firestorm to .170 hitting.

Kate Pestova and Katie Defer each recorded a double-double for the Spirit. Pestova went for 15 kills and 11 digs with Defer adding 11 kills and 17 digs. Avie Butsko contributed 14 kills – on .370 hitting – and six blocks.
