Spirit Throw Block Party in Defeating Firestorm

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ women's volleyball team celebrated its five-set comeback win over Arizona Christian on Tuesday night by throwing a block party to earn a four-set win over their crosstown rivals on Wednesday night in Faith Arena.

OUAZ (3-1, 2-0 GSAC) set a school record with 17 blocks in its 25-18, 26-24, 22-25, 25-22 win. In the two matches this week, eight of the nine sets played ended being decided by three points or less. Four different Spirit players had at least six blocks on Tuesday and the team added 94 digs to hold Arizona Christian (1-4, 0-2) to .098 hitting.

It took all of those blocks and 54 kills to earn a second straight win for the Spirit. OUAZ finished with at least 12 kills in every set and closed out the win with 16 kills and .283 hitting in the fourth set. The team hit .153 on the night.

Brooklyn Rainer tied the school record with her nine blocks. Avie Butsko and Chelsea Taylor had eight blocks apiece with Kate Pestova adding six.

Pestova led the offensive effort with 16 kills while adding 15 digs for her fourth straight double-double. Butsko chipped in 11 kills – on .333 hitting – and Katie Defer finished with seven kills.

OUAZ was also solid at the service line where they tied the season-high with nine service aces. Defer recorded three of the aces. Cristal Carrizoza had two aces and 27 assists.

Valentina Trovato picked up 33 digs in her first start at libero.

Annabelle Camoirano led ACU with 14 kills and Alyssa Fierro had 32 digs.

OUAZ will now head to Illinois for three matches over the weekend. The trip begins on Friday when they face St. Francis at 6 p.m. (AZ) in Joliet, Ill.
