Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Despite Improved Performance, Spirit Swept by SDCC

SURPRISE, ARIZ. - After shooting under 27% from the field in each of its last three games, the OUAZ women's basketball team put together a better performance on Saturday. That effort was still not enough for a victory, as the Spirit were swept by San Diego Christian in a 59-49 loss at Faith Arena.

The Spirit trailed by as many as 13 throughout the game, but were able to pull themselves within four early in the final quarter. The Hawks eventually pulled away, and OUAZ never tied the game after the first quarter.

Makayla Holthaus led OUAZ in scoring, putting through 14 points in her first ever start. Landyn Lovelady finished one point shy of a double-double, putting up nine while grabbing 11 rebounds.

Even though every Spirit starter scored at least two points, only one bench player found the bottom of the net. Jada Golding scored six, but her bench compatriots shot a combined 0-11 from the field.

The Hawks leaned heavily on its starters, with that unit playing 74% of the minutes. Maddison Zuniga scored 16, and Keren Houge added 12 to lead San Diego Christian to a 3-1 GSAC record.

The Spirit will wrap up its regular season next week with a trio of games. They will host SAGU American Indian College on Tuesday before welcoming in Arizona Christian on Thursday. The 2020-2021 finale will be at ACU on Friday night.
