Spirit Piece Together Smashing Performances for Saturday Sweep

Despite starting the year with a seven-game losing streak, the OUAZ softball team has quickly reversed its momentum at the OLLU Nationwide Classic. The Spirit managed a sweep during day two in San Antonio.

OUAZ 8, Houston Victoria 7 (8 innings)

The previous day's matchup saw a pitching battle between the two schools, and it looked to be the same through the first five innings. OUAZ was able to take a 2-0 lead by scoring single runs in the third and the fourth, highlighted by Avery Bohn's solo home run.

The Jaguars scored its first run in the bottom of the fifth, as Kaylee Lopez came around after reaching on a leadoff error. It could have been two runs in that same play, but Ashley Reyna was thrown out trying to score right behind Lopez.

That was not the first time a Jaguar runner had been thrown out, as the Charlene De Anda's throw in the bottom of the fourth cut down Alexis Gonzalez's attempt to get her team's first run.

The sixth inning saw the teams score a combined six runs, with the Spirit tallying four. The Jaguars scored two in the bottom half, and then scored three in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game.

Houston-Victoria tied the game with no outs and had the bases loaded, but Cori Turner was able to get out of her own jam. She struck out Marisa Mendoza, got Krystal Rodriguez to pop up to third, and Lopez grounded out to third to end the inning.

Despite losing a five run lead, the Spirit answered in the eighth. Mashayla Beltran singled home Nikki Ayala, and Bohn doubled to bring home Colby Johnson for a two-run OUAZ lead.
Alexandra McCutcheon came in to get the save, but did give up a run. After allowing Lopez to score, McCutcheon struck out Jessalyn Burkett and Mendoza to secure the team's second win.

Bohn, Beltran, Katelyn Chambers and Andraya Rhinehart each had multi-hit efforts in the victory. Bohn and Rhinehart also had two RBIs apiece.

OUAZ 9, Our Lady of the Lake 6 (6 innings)

The bats did not slow down in the Spirit's second game of the day, as they scored three runs on the host team to start the game. Beltran tripled on the third pitch of the contest, and came around to score with Katelyn Chambers when Janessa Rivera knocked a triple of her own. Briana Tucker singled home Rivera, but OUAZ was unable to bring across any more.

The Saints answered with four of its own in the bottom half, and that 4-3 lead stuck until the fourth inning. Highlighted by Rivera's three-run home run, OUAZ scored five runs to take an 8-3 lead.

OLLU scored single runs in the fourth and fifth, but OUAZ held a 9-6 lead after the sixth inning after Rivera recorded her sixth RBI of the day. The Spirit were able to keep the Saints off the board in the bottom half, and OUAZ was awarded the win after the game was called due to darkness.

Rivera completed 3/4ths of the cycle to go along with the six RBIs and two runs. Katelyn Chambers was perfect at the plate, notching four singles in four at-bats. Beltran also had two hits, notching her third multi-hit game in the last four contests.

While Rivera broke the record for RBIs in a game, Beltran, Chambers and Tucker accounted for the other three. Rivera's new RBI mark broke the record set twice during the 2019 season.

The Spirit will have a chance to turn its winning streak to four on Sunday when they take on Bellevue in the final day of the OLLU Nationwide Classic. First pitch from San Antonio is set for 8:00 a.m. Arizona Time.
