Flames Hold Off OUAZ Rally for First Win of Series

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Down 7-0 at one point on Saturday, the OUAZ baseball team rallied to make it interesting before falling 10-7 in the third game of a five-game series against Bethesda at Surprise Stadium.

After Bethesda (1-6) used a five-run third inning to help them build that seven-run cushion, OUAZ (3-4) began to chip away with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jared Crockett, Jacob Griffin, and Griffin Hagen each drove in a run in the inning.

Hagen added another RBI single in the bottom of the eight that had the Spirit within 7-4, but the Flames struck for three important insurance runs in the top of the ninth to get their advantage up to 10-4. In the bottom of the inning, OUAZ would score three times after loading the bases with only one out. Hagen drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly, but Deon Reese was called out on strikes to end the game with a runner on second.

Hagen finished 2 for 4 with three RBI for his third multi-hit and second multi-RBI games of the season. Adrian Salazar added another two hits and he scored three runs. Juan Navarrete was 2 for 2 with a double.

Tommy Koloski (1-1) suffered the loss by allowing six runs (five earned) on four hits in three innings. Travis Bailey allowed one run in 2.1 innings and Myles White was tagged with the final three runs against. Anthony Quattrocchi had two perfect innings of relief with one strikeout.

The series will take Sunday off before wrapping up with a 9/7 inning doubleheader on Monday at Willow Canyon High School with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
