Quattrocchi Spins Gem to Earn Spirit a Split

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ baseball team split a doubleheader with Bethesda on Monday to earn a win of the 5-game series. OUAZ dropped the opener 12-6 before Anthony Quattrocchi threw a complete-game shutout for a 9-0 win in the nightcap.

With the day's results, OUAZ is now 4-5 overall this season.

Quattrocchi (1-1) was stellar all evening as he scattered just two hits while recording a career-high eight strikeouts in posting the first complete-game shutout in program history. All four Bethesda (2-6) batters that reached base were stranded in scoring position. Quattrocchi finished with 90 pitches (61 strikes) and walked just one.

Adrian Salazar sparked the offense with two hits and three RBI. His first-inning single gave the Spirit a 1-0 lead. They would add two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth before blowing the game open with a five-run sixth inning.

Elijah Celaya added a pair of RBI with a double in the sixth inning. Brian Camacho and Ben Lewis each scored a pair of runs.

In the first game of the day, each team scored three times in the first inning. Bethesda then struck for four runs in the top of the second and never looked back. OUAZ would get as close at 8-5 after six, but the Flames crossed the plate four times in the seventh to end any thoughts of a Spirit comeback.

Jacob Griffin delivered three hits and an RBI in the loss. Salazar had a hit and RBI while Griffin Hagen and Kobie Tinsley each had a double.

Tanner Fallon (0-1) took the loss after allowing seven runs (four earned) in 1.2 innings. Robert Jesionowski worked two scoreless with two strikeouts.

OUAZ will now have two weeks off from competition before they host Arizona Christian in a non-conference game at Royals 6 on February 23.
