Game Recap: Softball |

Popplewell Spins Gem, Tucker Homers to Lead Spirit to First Victory

The Spirit battled through a loaded schedule to start the 2021 season, and battled through on Friday to pick up the first victory of the season. The Our Lady of the Lake University Nationwide Classic marked the first time in program history the Spirit played in Texas, and also marked the first time ever OUAZ picked up win number one away from its home field.

Our Lady of the Lake 5, OUAZ 3

It was an early morning for OUAZ, as the first pitch came across the plate at 9:00 a.m. Central Time. The Spirit bats woke up quickly, as Avery Bohn hit a bases-loaded double to bring home two runners for the early lead.

The Saints responded with one in the bottom half of the inning, but Mashayla Beltran kept the offense going with a solo home run in the top of the second. It was a struggle offensively after the team's first run of the year, as the Spirit mustered only three more hits in the final 5.1 innings.

OUAZ held a 3-1 lead until the fourth when OLLU got one back thanks to a leadoff, solo home run by Joanna Gonzalez. The Saints took the lead in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a Gonzalez two-RBI double, and Julissa Moreno scored on a wild pitch later in the inning.

Despite getting runners on first and second with no outs, the Spirit were unable to capitalize in the sixth inning, and went down in order with its final at-bats. Cori Turner went 6.0 inning, even though she was pulled for Alexandra McCutcheon in the fifth, giving up four runs (all earned) on six hits and striking out two.

OUAZ 2, Houston-Victoria 1

Game two of the day still saw dim results at the plate for the Spirit, but a bright pitching performance by Phoebe Popplewell. After giving up a run in the top of the second on a bunt single back to her, Popplewell allowed only one hit and four total baserunners the rest of the way.

At one point, Popplewell retired eight consecutive batters between the fourth and seventh innings. That streak was broken by a Jackie Longoria single, but she was thrown out trying to steal second.

The Spirit took the lead on a Briana Tucker two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth, the team's second home run in as many days. OUAZ also got hits from Beltran, Kelly Stumper and Samantha Miller.

The Spirit will have a shot for two more wins against the same teams on Saturday afternoon. They will see Houston-Victoria to start the day, with first pitch scheduled for 10:15 a.m. Arizona time.
