Johnson Shuts Down Bethesda in Game Two

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ baseball team got a dominant start from Gage Johnson, and the offense delivered in the middle innings as the Spirit secured an 11-1 win over Bethesda on Friday night at Surprise Stadium.

Johnson (1-0) threw seven shutout innings with nine strikeouts to earn his first win of the season. He scattered five hits and allowed just one walk over 95 pitches thrown.

OUAZ (3-3) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a 2-run double from Adrian Salazar. The Spirit would then cross the plate four times in the fourth inning before posting a 5-run sixth inning for the final tally of 11 runs.

Salazar led the team's 10-hit effort with a 3 for 4 game including the double and three runs batted in. Ben Lewis also had a multi-hit game with a single and a double. Brian Camacho drove in three runs and Jared Crockett scored three times.

Matthew Wilmot escaped a bases-loaded jam in the top of the eighth allowing just one of the inherited runners to score. Kapono Rawlins then worked a perfect ninth to close out the victory.

The teams will close out the scheduled series on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Surprise Stadium. They will play the added doubleheader on Monday at Willow Canyon High School.
