Spirit Rout Flames in Series Opener

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ baseball team opened its weekend series with Bethesda with a resounding 19-2 win on Thursday night at Surprise Stadium. The game was shortened to seven innings after OUAZ (2-3) scored in four of the innings they came to the plate.

Leading 5-1 to start the bottom of the fourth inning, the Spirit scored seven times in the frame for its most runs in an inning since 2018 and the second-most in program history. They would then repeat the feat in the bottom of the sixth inning.

OUAZ scored the 19 runs on just 11 hits while taking advantage of nine walks and three Bethesda (0-5) errors. Four players recorded multiple hits in the win, including Fernando Lugo who finished 2 for 2 with four RBI.

Jacob Griffin delivered the final blow with a 3-run home run into the right-field bullpen to cap the seven-run sixth inning. His first career home run was also his first career hit and runs batted in.

Tanner Fallon allowed just one run on two hits in four innings as the starter. Hayden Sandman (1-1) earned the win after throwing the final three innings and allowing one run on three hits. Both pitchers finished with five strikeouts.

Game two of this now five-game series will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday evening at Surprise Stadium.
