Johnson Pitches Spirit to Series Win

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Riding a dominant outing from starting pitcher Gage Johnson, the OUAZ baseball team defeated The Master's 7-1 on Saturday afternoon at TX Rangers 5 to earn a 3-1 series win.

"We got better this week, starting with the game on Tuesday against ACU," OUAZ head coach Tim Montez said after the game. "Guys are starting to relax and getting out of their own way and becoming more tough-minded."

After giving up a leadoff home run to Will Batz on the second pitch of the game, Johnson (2-0) took charge and held The Master's (10-8) to just six hits and no runs over his eight innings. Johnson walked two and recorded eight strikeouts and at one point retired 10 straight Mustang hitters.

Jordan Hollins sparked the OUAZ (7-7) offense by going 4 for 4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. This is just the eighth 4-hit game in program history and the first of the season for an OUAZ player.

The Spirit had 13 hits as a team with Jared Crockett (three hits) and Deon Reese (two hits) also posting multi-hit games. Jacob Griffin had a pair of RBI and Elijah Celaya picked up his first triple of the season.

Leading 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning, OUAZ added four in the frame to blow the game open. Reese and Hollins each singled in runs to start the scoring the inning and then Kobie Tinsley scored from second on a wild pitch. Griffin capped the scoring in the frame with a sacrifice fly.

After Johnson allowed a single to start the ninth, Robert Jesionowski came in to close out the win allowing one hit with one strikeout.

Montez added, "Hopefully we can continue to trust the process as we go on the road for the first time this season."

OUAZ will now head to Texas where they will play eight games in seven days, starting with a four-game series at Our Lady of the Lake on March 4-6 in San Antonio.
