Spirit and Mustangs Split Friday’s Doubleheader

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The OUAZ baseball team split a doubleheader against The Master's on Friday night at KC Royals 6. After The Master's took the opener 5-2, OUAZ came back to win the nightcap 6-5.

In the opener, OUAZ (6-7) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Elijah Celaya. They held the advantage into the top of the fifth when Will Batz followed a pair of Spirit errors with a 3-run home run to right field to put The Master's (10-7) ahead 3-1.

It was 5-1 in the bottom of the ninth when Daniel Partida scored on a TMU error. Then as the tying run, Adrian Salazar grounded out to end the game.

Celaya finished the game with a pair of hits and that RBI. Jared Crockett also had two hits including a double.

Hayden Sandman (1-3) took the loss after allowing three runs (one earned) in 5.2 innings. Matthew Wilmot worked the final 2.2 innings allowing one hit and no runs.

The Mustangs opened the nightcap with a pair of first-inning runs and they maintained that advantage until the bottom of the fourth inning. In that frame, the Spirit would send 10 batters to the plate and strike for five runs. The key blow was a 2-run single from Crockett that broke a 2-2 tie.

Crockett drove in another run in the bottom of the sixth and that proved to be the difference as the Mustangs for two in the top of the seventh before Myles White picked up his second save of the season by stranding the bases loaded after coming on to relieve Anthony Quattrocchi (2-1).

Quattrocchi picked up the win with 6.1 innings of work that featured five hits allowed and seven strikeouts.

Crockett finished the second game with another three hits and those three RBI. Celaya was 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored. Deon Reese recorded two hits in two at-bats with one RBI.

The two teams will close this four-game series on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they meet on Rangers 5.
