Five Run Eighth Gives Spirit Win in Opener

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Trailing for most of the night, the OUAZ baseball team scored five times in the bottom of the eighth inning to overtake The Master's and secure a 10-9 win in the opening game of a four-game weekend series on Thursday night.

Down 4-0 through three innings, OUAZ (5-6) had rallied back to trail 6-5 after seven innings. The Master's (9-6) then scored three times in the top of the eighth to change the energy of the ballgame.

The Spirit would take the momentum back with consecutive one-out singles from Kobie Tinsley and Anastacio Salas and a walk by Fernando Lugo to load the bases. Jacob Griffin delivered a single to right that went through the legs of the defender allowing three runs to score. Jared Crockett drove in Griffin with an infield single to tie the game in the next at-bat and then scored the winning run three batters later on a sacrifice fly from Elijah Celaya.

OUAZ recorded 14 hits in the win with five guys posting a pair of hits. Ben Lewis had an eighth-inning double of the team's only extra-base hit of the evening. Adrian Salazar and Griffin each scored a pair of runs and Jordan Hollins had two RBI.

The Spirit used eight pitchers with Tommy Koloski getting the start and allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits. Kapono Rawlins (1-0) got the win after stranding runners at second and third with a strikeout to end the eighth. Robert Jesionowski earned his first save of the season by working around one hit in the top of the ninth.

Will Batz went 3 for 5 and finished a home run shy of the cycle to lead the Mustangs. Miles Henderson (1-1) suffered the loss by allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits in one-third of an inning.

The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday at KC Royals 6 with the first pitch of game one at 4 p.m. Spectators are not allowed inside the facility.
