Spirit Halt Warriors Comeback Attempt with Five-Set Victory

SAN DIMAS, Calif. – One week after rallying from an 0-2 hole to win a match, the OUAZ women's volleyball team was about to give up a 2-0 lead before they escaped with a five-set win over Life Pacific in GSAC action at Mehl Court on Tuesday night.

Leading by two sets and 25-24 in the third, OUAZ (5-3, 3-0 GSAC) seemed poised to open this two-match series with a sweep. But Life Pacific (5-5, 1-2) had other plans as they came back to win the third and eventually force a fifth set before the Spirit survived with a 30-28, 25-19, 25-27, 10-25, 15-9 victory.

The match was competitive for much of the night with sets one and three combining to see 34 ties and 17 lead changes. In total, the evening saw 44 ties and 19 lead changes.

OUAZ was able to sneak out the fifth set by not committing a hitting error while Life Pacific had six. The Spirit ended the match with a 57-55 advantage in kills and hitting .167. They used 11 blocks and 91 digs to slow the Warriors to .174 hitting.

Kate Pestova recorded the first 20-20 match in program history with an OUAZ season-high 20 kills while adding 21 digs. She hit .277 on 47 attempts and added five service aces and three blocks.

Katie Defer added 10 kills with Brooklyn Rainer posting eight kills and seven blocks. Chelsea Taylor had eight blocks with Valentina Trovato getting 25 digs. Sierra Dominguez (24 assists and 11 digs) and CristalCarrizoza (22 assists and 11 digs) each had a double-double.

LPU got 17 kills apiece from Sydney Culpepper and Hannah Caddow in defeat.

The Spirit and Warriors will play match two of the series on Wednesday at 2 p.m. (AZ).
