Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Spirit Show Improvement in Season Openers

SURPRISE, ARIZ. - The OUAZ women's tennis team entered the 2021 season looking for its first dual win in two years, but will have to wait a little longer as they dropped both matchups on Friday afternoon.

Western New Mexico 4, OUAZ 0
The Mustangs took the doubles point quickly, winning 6-0 and 6-1 in matches 1 and 3, respectively. OUAZ's Maya Salamon and Saskia Wells were tied 3-3 in the first set of their doubles match, but did not finish after Western New Mexico took the other two matchups quickly.

Veronica Gallardo, Veronica Grimes and Giulia Leali were all battling in their singles matches, but found the same fate as the doubles, getting their matches cut short. The Mustangs took three individual points in a short time, rendering the other three singles matches unnecessary. Grimes did win the second set in her match before it was called.

Colorado-Mesa 4, OUAZ 0
Gallardo and Leali were battling back in the first set of their doubles match, but it was stopped as the Mavericks picked up the double point with a pair of 6-0 victories.

Leali won the first set of her individual match against Issy Coman, but did not get a chance to pick up the point for OUAZ. The Spirit saw the same fate as in the first dual, getting down 4-0 in a fast fashion, ending the other singles matches where they stood.

The Spirit will travel to Arizona Christian on Saturday for an early morning matchup. The dual is scheduled to start with the doubles matches at 11:00 a.m. Arizona time.
