SURPRISE, ARIZ. - The OUAZ softball team wrapped up its doubleheader on Monday afternoon with a pair of game against 17th-ranked College of Idaho. The Spirit split its series with the Yotes last season, but could not find the same results this time around.
Game 1: College of Idaho 11, OUAZ 1
After falling behind early due to a Lacie Miller three-run home run in the second inning, the Spirit responded with a run of its own in the bottom half of the frame.
Jaymie Moore walked and eventually came around to score on an
Andraya Rhinehart single, but that was all the offense the Spirit could muster.
Following that inning, the Spirit only had one hit – a leadoff single by
Briana Tucker in the bottom of the third. COI's Hannah Mcnerney retired 12 straight OUAZ batters to end the game, a streak that did not extend only because the game ended after the sixth due to a run rule.
The Yotes scored its runs in bunches, tallying three or more runs in every inning they scored in. Kaily Christensen hit a two-run home run in the fifth, finishing the game as one of four players with multiple RBIs for College of Idaho.
Game 2: College of Idaho 9, OUAZ 1
The Spirit could not find its offense in the second game either, tallying only a run and two hits as the game ended in a run rule again, this time in five innings. College of Idaho scored three runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings to pull away in the afternoon finale.
Rachel Stockseth singled home OUAZ's only run in the bottom of the fifth after
Janessa Rivera and Tucker were hit by pitches to lead off the inning. The Spirit's only other hit came in the bottom of the first on a leadoff single by Rhinehart.
Stockseth was the only player to reach base twice for OUAZ. Christensen and Katelyn Wilfert each had three RBI's for College of Idaho.
The Spirit will now take its first road trip of the season, as they head to Texas for the 2021 Our Lady of the Lake Nationwide Classic. They will play host Our Lady of the Lake in the first of five games starting Friday.
