Spirit Avenge Earlier Loss with 73-67 Defeat of Redhawks

SURPRISE, Ariz. – In an impressive turnaround from the beginning of the season, the OUAZ women's basketball team delivered its best performance of the season to defeat Benedictine Mesa 73-67 on Tuesday night in Faith Arena. The win by OUAZ (2-9) avenges a 37-point loss to Benedictine Mesa (7-2) from 47 days ago in the second game of the season.

It wasn't the best start for the Spirit on Tuesday as they trailed 16-10 after the first quarter, during which they shot 27.8 percent from the field. They would turn things around and shoot 60 percent the rest of the game.

OUAZ scored the final four points of the half to head to the locker room tied at 32-32. The Spirit then extended the run to 16-2 to open a 44-34 lead with 5:43 to play in the third quarter. BenU would trim that deficit to one four times the rest of the game, but the Spirit never surrendered their advantage.

Marlee Johnson scored 22 points on 9 of 16 shooting to lead the Spirit. She made two of the team's four 3-pointers and grabbed a team-best eight rebounds. Her second triple came with 2:19 remaining and OUAZ leading 63-62.

The Spirit finished with a 36-28 edge in paint points, and they scored 21 points from 21 Benu turnovers. OUAZ also finished with a 48-38 advantage in rebounds by grabbing 35 defensive boards. They held the Redhawks to 30.4 percent shooting and just 5 of 16 from three. OUAZ set a program record with 11 blocked shots.

Sedona Anderson added 14 points, and she blocked three shots. Landyn Lovelady and Makayla Holthaus had 10 points each off the bench. Virginia Edmondson led the way with five assists, and Violet Toon also had three blocks.

Grace Russell scored 19 points off the bench to lead Benedictine Mesa.

OUAZ will play its final game before the Christmas break on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they host Bethesda at Faith Arena.
