Spirit Dominate Fourth to Down Flames

SURPRISE, Ariz. – A solid fourth quarter allowed the OUAZ women's basketball team to pull away for a 63-43 win over Bethesda on Saturday afternoon at Faith Arena. The win is the second straight for the Spirit.

OUAZ (3-9) led 41-36 through three quarters before outscoring Bethesda (0-18) 22-6 in the final 10 minutes. The Spirit held the Flames without a basket over the final 5:28 of the game and only two in the final period.

The Spirit ended the day shooting 36.8 percent from the field, but they grabbed 21 offensive rebounds for 11 second-chance points. Those offensive rebounds helped the team to a 50-31 edge on the glass while posting a 28-12 edge in paint points.

Marlee Johnson scored 15 points with a pair of threes to lead the Spirit. She added eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Sedona Anderson finished with nine points, nine rebounds, and five assists. Cierra Kiser and Elizabeth Ortwine also had nine points apiece.

Bethesda had opened the game on an 11-4 run and led 17-15 after one quarter. OUAZ then held the Flames to 1 of 8 shooting in the second quarter. That had Bethesda at 31.0 percent for the game while the Flames also committed 23 turnovers for 21 Spirit points.

Alex Buckley led the Flames with 15 points.

OUAZ is now off until January 6, when they will host Vanguard in Faith Arena at 5 p.m.
