Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Johnson Leads Spirit to Season's First Win

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Playing at home for the first time this season – and in front of a home crowd since the end of the 2019-20 season – the OUAZ women's basketball team secured its first win of the season by defeating SAGU American Indian College 78-53 on Tuesday night at Faith Arena.

OUAZ (1-3) got off to a slow start and led SAGU 13-9 at the end of the first quarter. Things changed in the second quarter as the Spirit went on a 32-10 run that carried into the third quarter and had them out in front 45-21 midway through the third.

The Spirit closed out the victory by shooting 64.3 percent – including 4 of 6 from beyond the arc – in the fourth quarter. That effort raised the overall shooting performance to 45.8 percent, with seven makes from distance.

Marlee Johnson led the way for OUAZ with 20 and nine rebounds. The output nearly doubled her career-high of 11 set last season, and it's just the fourth double-digit scoring effort of her career. Johnson made 7 of 12 from the field with four 3-pointers and three assists.

OUAZ held the Warriors to 32.2 percent shooting and didn't allow a 3-pointer for the first time in program history. The Spirit had a 51-27 edge in rebounds, and they scored 30 points from 23 SAGU turnovers.

Makayla Holthaus added 13 points, with Sedona Anderson scoring ten. Violet Toon collected eight rebounds and blocked three shots.

SAGU got a game-high 29 points from Deidre Roberts off the bench.

The Spirit will look to ride the momentum of this win into a Thursday rematch against Embry-Riddle in Faith Arena at 7 p.m.
