Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cold Spell Slows Spirit in Home Loss

SURPRISE, Ariz. – In a rematch from the season's first game, the OUAZ women's basketball team showed improvement but couldn't flip the first result as they dropped a 58-45 decision against Embry-Riddle on Thursday night at Faith Arena.

OUAZ (1-4) had an early 11-8 lead before Embry-Riddle (3-3) went on a 19-5 run to build an 11-point advantage midway through the second quarter. OUAZ made went 1 for 19 from the field during the crucial spurt and missed all seven attempts from beyond the arc.

Embry would push its advantage to 18 late in the third quarter when the Spirit began to make a run. The home squad scored 16 of the game's following 21 points, and when Marlee Johnson hit a 3-pointer with 2:29 remaining, the Eagles lead was down to 51-45. That would be as close as the Spirit would get as the visitors made enough free throws down the stretch to hold off the rally.

The game ended with OUAZ shooting 25.0 percent from the field and hitting on 4 of 23 from three. They grabbed 52 rebounds, including 20 at the offensive end, while scoring 20 points in the paint and 15 points from the 16 ERAU turnovers.

Makayla Holthaus led the Spirit with 15 points on 6 of 10 shooting with six rebounds and two blocked shots. Marlee Johnson and Elizabeth Ortwine added six points apiece.

Embry shot 35.6 percent with 26 points in the paint. The Eagles forced 18 turnovers with 13 steals. Hannah Urbano led the team with 27 points after scoring 20 in the first half.

OUAZ will now get set to open GSAC play in California next week. That trip begins at San Diego Christian on November 18 at 6:30 p.m. (Arizona).
