OUAZ Sweeps Life Pacific to Clinch Conference Title

SURPRISE, Ariz. – On the afternoon they started by celebrating the senior class, the 19th-ranked OUAZ women's volleyball team ended by celebrating the program's first-ever GSAC Championship after a 3-0 sweep of Life Pacific at Faith Arena.

OUAZ (23-2, 15-1 GSAC) clinched the title just two seasons after going 3-15 in the conference and 7-20 overall.

It wasn't going to be easy for the Spirit as they battled Life Pacific (17-8, 10-6) through 20 ties and nine lead changes for a 25-18, 25-17, 25-23 win to avenge its loss against the Warriors earlier this season.

OUAZ trailed in all three sets, including by as much as six points at different times. In each of the situations they trailed, they went back to what led them through the winning streak and let the offense take over. The Spirit recorded 15 kills in each of the first two sets and then added 12 in the third for a 42-34 edge at the end of the match.

While they were racking up the kill total and hitting .208, the Spirit defense also limited the Warriors to only .118 hitting behind six blocks and 64 digs. Life managed just six kills on negative-.049 hitting in the second set.

Six different players had at least three kills for the Spirit, with Kate Pestova again leading the way with 16. She picked up 13 digs for her 11th double-double of the season while adding three blocks.

Brooklyn Rainer added eight kills while Chelsea Taylor and Avie Butsko posted six and five, respectively. Cristal Carrizoza tallied 34 assists, 13 digs, and two aces. Valentina Trovato finished with 11 digs, and Erin Campbell had 10.

OUAZ has two matches remaining in the regular season – both on the road – before they learn their postseason fate on November 15. The first of those two road matches is Friday at San Diego Christian.
