No. 16 OUAZ Rallies Again for Five-Set Win

EL CAJON, Calif. – Playing for the first time since clinching the GSAC championship, the 16th-ranked OUAZ women's volleyball team appeared sluggish dropped the first two sets at San Diego Christian. Then, like they have all season, the Spirit flipped the switch and rallied all the way back to win the match in five sets.

By coming back for the 16-25, 22-25, 25-13, 25-20, 15-8 victory, OUAZ (24-2, 16-1 GSAC) is now 3-0 this season when they lose the first two sets of a match. They also improve to 8-1 in matches that go to a deciding set this season, with a win in 13 of the last 14 dating back to the 2019 season.

While the offense played a role by picking up 55 kills on .208 hitting on Friday, the defensive effort sparked the comeback. The Spirit held San Diego Christian (13-10, 8-9) to only 22 kills in the final three sets combined after giving up 27 in the first two sets. The Hawks hit just .117 in the match, including negative-.029 in the fourth set.

Kate Pestova recorded 20 kills to notch her eighth match this season – and third in the past five matches – with 20-plus kills. She hit .224 while adding 11 digs and one service ace. Avie Butsko added six kills, eight blocks, three aces, and three digs.

Livia De Pra posted eight kills while Brooklyn Rainer and Cristal Carrizoza had seven apiece. Chelsea Taylor got six kills.

OUAZ picked up 71 digs and ten blocks to slow the Hawks'Hawks's attack. Valentina Trovato came up with a match-high 29 digs, and Butsko had eight blocks. Carrizoza finished with 40 assists, 12 digs, and two aces.

San Diego Christian got 12 kills from Jessica Pinasco.
