Spirit Advance to Semifinals with 4-0 Shutout

SURPRISE, Ariz. – After having its postseason canceled last season, the OUAZ women's soccer team made up for it with a 4-0 win over Menlo in the opening round of the 2021 GSAC Women's Soccer Tournament on Saturday morning at Spirit Field.

Cassidi Calzaretta scored twice for OUAZ (11-3-3) in the win, including the game's opening strike in the seventh minute. She carried the ball down the left sideline and then lifted her shot over the visiting keeper and into the side netting at the far side of the goal.

As Menlo (9-4-3) had started to build momentum over the next 25 minutes, the Spirit took it all back when Saipress Jones headed in a corner from Haley Howard, giving them a 2-0 advantage that they carried into halftime.

Calzaretta would make it 3-0 on a penalty kick in the 53rd minute. Then in the 55th minute, Paige Murray-Hernandez played a through ball that Emily Lynch collected right before the keeper would arrive and the slotted home her shot for the final margin.

OUAZ finished the game with nine shots, and the four goals were the only attempts the team put on frame. Menlo got off 11 total shots, and they forced Chloe Gutierrez into three saves to record her third shutout of the season.

The win puts the Spirit into the semifinals, where they will face Hope International on Thursday at Thorrington Field on the Westmont College campus in Santa Barbara, California.
