Tourney Run Ends With 2-1 Loss in Semifinals

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The OUAZ women's soccer team saw its run in the GSAC Tournament come to an end with a 2-1 loss to Hope International in the semifinals on Thursday afternoon at Thorrington Field.

OUAZ dropped to 11-4-3 on the season with the loss and now will wait for an at-large invite to the NAIA National Championship or accept a bid to the NCCAA National Championship.

The Spirit took the lead in the ninth minute when Saipress Jones scored her ninth goal of the season on a feed from Cassidi Calzaretta. They would hold that 1-0 advantage until the 43rd minute when Hope International (12-0-2) notched the equalizer from Luli Bethencourt.

Neither team generated many chances in the second half, and the game remained deadlocked into the 78th minute. That is when the Royals' Emma Jackson beat OUAZ keeper Chloe Gutierrez to a loose ball in the box and slotted it home for the eventual game-winner.

Trailing for the first time in the game, OUAZ was able to get three shots attempted in the final 12 minutes, but only one of those was on goal.

HIU would finish the game with an 18-10 advantage in total shots, with the Spirit putting four chances on goal. The Spirit also had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

Jones led the Spirit with three shots, with Grace Green attempting two shots. Gutierrez made five saves.
