Spirit Open Pool Play with Record Outing against Mighty Oaks

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – In its first action in 18 days, the OUAZ women's soccer team opened pool play action at the NCCAA National Championship with a 6-1 win over Oakland City at the Austin-Tindall Sports Complex.

The tournament's No. 3 seed, OUAZ (12-4-3), took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute when Haley Chitwood chipped a corner kick from Haley Howard backward over her head and the Oakland City (8-11-1) keeper.

Seventh-seeded Oakland City leveled that game at 1-1 in the 17th minute with a goal from a distance by Molly Knox. The Spirit responded in the 24th minute as Cassidi Calzaretta played a through ball to Ki'ilaweau Aweau that had Aweau alone with the keeper for an easy finish.

Chandler Schioppi provided the Spirit a goal in the 43rd minute when she tapped in a loose ball in the box for a 3-1 lead. The goal was set up by a corner from Amanda Witkowski that Haley Howard headed on goal that was turned away.

Working for the 4-goal differential that helps with tiebreakers at the National Championship, OUAZ continued its attack in the second half. They would extend the lead to 4-1 in the 66th minute, with Howard hitting from 25 yards out after a shot from Saipress Jones was deflected in Howard's direction.

The max differential came in the 74th minute from Emily Lynch as she finished inside the right post on a breakaway. Jones started the run-out with a ball that found Lynch on the run down the left side. Lynch then added a second goal in the 78th minute as she tapped home a cross from Aweau.

When the final horn sounded, OUAZ had a program-record six goals in a postseason game. It is also a season-high for goals in a game by the Spirit. They finished with a 25-7 advantage in shots with 16 of those chances on goal.

Jones led all players in the game with seven shots while Paige Murray-Hernandez added five shots and Howard had four.

Chloe Gutierrez recorded her sixth win of the season in goal with six saves.

OUAZ will close pool play on Wednesday at 4 p.m. (AZ) when they face Bob Jones University. The Spirit would advance to the semifinals with a win.
