No. 19 Spirit Sweep Royals to Run Win Streak to Ten

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Needing a win to clinch the program's first-ever berth to the NAIA National Championship, the 19th-ranked OUAZ women's volleyball team put on a clinic and earned a 3-0 sweep over Hope International on Friday evening at Faith Arena.

By securing the 25-15, 25-16, 25-6 decision, OUAZ (22-2, 14-1 GSAC) guaranteed it would finish in the top-two of the GSAC standings and earned one of the league's two postseason bids. The Spirit also ran their current winning streak to ten straight wins.

OUAZ jumped out to a quick start and never slowed down as they banged out 17 kills in the opening set. That would be more than the 16 that Hope International (8-16, 4-11) would total in the entire match as the Spirit finished the night with 42 kills on .257 hitting.

Five Spirit players totaled at least five kills in the win, with Kate Pestova leading the team with 11. Brooklyn Rainer and Chelsea Taylor added eight kills apiece, while Livia De Pra added six.

The service line was another boost to the Spirit as they picked up 15 service aces to match their season-high. They were also able to use 54 digs and six blocks to hold the Royals to .023 hitting.

Cristal Carrizoza notched 35 assists, seven digs, and her four aces were tied for the team lead with Pestova. Valentina Trovato tallied three aces and ten digs, with De Pra getting 15 digs and two aces. Rainer led the way with four blocks, while Avie Butsko and Taylor had three blocks each.

Hope International got six kills from Carissa Wiles.

OUAZ will play its final home match on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host Life Pacific. The team will recognize its senior class before the match.
