OUAZ Falls to Corban in Pool Play Opener

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Playing at the final site of the NAIA Women's Volleyball National Championship for the first time in program history, the OUAZ women's volleyball team gave No. 8 Corban a challenge before falling in four sets.

With the 16-25, 25-18, 22-25, 18-25 results, OUAZ (26-3) suffered its first loss since October 1. The Spirit is now 0-1 in Pool H and will need a win and some help to advance to bracket play.

The National Championship experience of Corban (30-2) showed in the first set as the Warriors banged 18 kills on .486 hitting while limiting the Spirit to just 11 kills. OUAZ responded in the second set behind its offensive leaders to tally 18 kills and even the match.

Corban would get out to a 17-12 advantage in the crucial third set before the Spirit tallied back to within 18-17. That would be as close as they would get as the Warriors closed out the third to take a 2-1 lead in the match, with both teams recording 13 kills in the set.

OUAZ began the fourth set with a 6-5 lead as they worked to extend the match, but six straight points from the Warriors put them in control. After OUAZ closed the deficit to 19-17, the pool's top seed ran off five straight and six of seven to clinch the match. While the Spirit had a 14-11 edge in fourth-set kills, the .370 hitting and one error from Corban proved the difference.

The match ended with the Spirit recording 56 kills on .243 hitting. They also held a 65-61 edge in digs. Corban totaled 52 kills on .289 hitting, and they created a gap on the scoreboard with a 7-2 lead in service aces and an 8-1.5 edge in blocks.

Kate Pestova led three Spirit players in double figures with 19 kills in a match she hit .286. The day included 15 digs for her 14th double-double of the season. Pestova also had one of the team's two aces.

Livia De Pra added 13 kills and 12 digs, while Avie Butsko contributed 11 kills and one block. Cristal Carrizoza had a double-double of 46 assists and 10 digs, with Valentina Trovato leading all players with 19 digs.

Rylee Troutman led Corban with 16 kills.

OUAZ will close out pool play this evening at 6 p.m. (AZ) when they face No. 11 Bellevue.
