Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Season Comes to End at NAIA Pool Play

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The OUAZ women's volleyball team saw its season come to an end on Tuesday night with a 3-1 loss to No. 11 Bellevue in a pool play match at the NAIA National Championship at the Tyson Events Center.

Bellevue (25-7) took the first two sets of the Pool H match by hitting over .300 in each set and totaling 28 kills. In looking for a repeat of the meeting with the Bruins from September, OUAZ took the third set with hopes of the reverse sweep. Bellevue turned away those thoughts and ended the Spirit season, and gave the team its first loss this season after falling behind 2-0.

That advantage in the offensive game would be enough for Bellevue all night as the Bruins totaled a 52-46 edge in kills while hitting .203 against the .168 from the Spirit. BU also held a 9-7 advantage in service aces and posted eight blocks.

Kate Pestova and Livia De Pra would each get to double figures in kills as they finished with 14 and 11, respectively. Pestova added 16 digs and a pair of aces, while De Pra had 15 digs and three aces.

Avie Butsko closed out her OUAZ career with seven kills on .412 hitting and four blocks. Cristal Carrizoza had 37 assists, with Valentina Trovato leading the team with 20 digs.

And while the 25-20, 25-18, 20-25, 25-21 loss is the most recent memory, it won't be the lasting memory of a team that changed the course of a five-year-old program. This OUAZ squad compiled a 26-4 overall record, won its first conference championship, its first NAIA National Championship Opening Round, and advanced to the NAIA National Championship Final Site just two seasons after going 7-20.
