OUAZ Sweeps Embry in NAIA Opening Round

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Playing its first-ever match in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round, the 16th-ranked OUAZ women's volleyball team made ore program history with a 3-0 sweep of Embry-Riddle (Ariz.). The win puts OUAZ (26-2) into the field of 24 that will head to Sioux City, Iowa, for the final site.

The Spirit put together one of its top performances of the season to secure the 25-19, 25-23, 25-11 victory. They nearly doubled up Embry-Riddle (27-9) in kills after finishing with a 47-24 advantage. OUAZ recorded at least 14 kills in each set, including 18 in the first set, while hitting .248 for the match.

Kate Pestova was nearly unstoppable with 18 kills on .311 hitting. She recorded eight of those kills in the first set to set the tone for the rest of the match. Her day also included 13 digs for her 13th double-double along with one service ace.

Livia De Pra also finished with a double-double after posting 11 kills with 11 digs.

OUAZ limited Embry to .016 hitting behind 68 digs and eight blocks. The Eagles only reached double figures in kills in the second set when they had 10, and they hit negative-.045 in the third set.

Valentina Trovato led all players with 18 digs, while Chelsea Taylor had five blocks. Cristal Carrizoza tallied 35 assists and 11 digs.

The NAIA will release the pools for the final site on Sunday, with play beginning November 30.
