Volleyball Opens Homestand by Defeating Lions

SURPRISE, Ariz. – Playing the first of its five-match homestand on Friday, the 20th-ranked OUAZ women's volleyball team picked up a 3-1 win over Vanguard in an important Golden State Athletic Conference match at Faith Arena.

With the 25-17, 19-25, 25-20, 25-22 victory, OUAZ improved to 14-2 overall and 7-1 in the conference. In the race to the conference title, they created some separation from Vanguard (10-3, 5-3 GSAC) by opening a two-game lead over the Lions with one match remaining in the first half of the conference season.

It felt like the Spirit would pick up an easy win on Friday as they knocked out 14 kills while holding the Lions to only seven in the opening set. However, Vanguard would post more kills in each of the following three sets and end the night with a 47-46 edge in total kills to keep the match interesting.

OUAZ had another solid performance at the service line, where they recorded 12 service aces. The Spirit also used 11 blocks and 67 digs to hold Vanguard to .143 hitting. They couldn't pull away as the Lions also had 11 blocks with 77 digs to limit the Spirit to .155 hitting.

Kate Pestova led the Spirit with 12 kills, while Brooklyn Rainer matched her season-high with 11 kills. Avie Butsko added eight kills, and Livia De Pra finished with seven.

Kahea A'ea notched an OUAZ high 17 digs, with De'Pra adding 13 for her 11th consecutive match in double figures. The duo joined Cristal Carrizoza for the team lead with three aces. Carrizoza also chipped in 41 assists and nine digs. Butsko had six blocks while Chelsea Taylor had five, and Rainer got four.

Vanguard got a match-high 19 kills from Cambria Fernandez.

The Spirit will close out the first half of conference play on Saturday when they host San Diego Christian at 1 p.m. in Faith Arena.
