(19)Spirit Hit the Road for First Time in 31 Days

The OUAZ men's soccer team may have slipped two spots in the poll, but its most recent outing on the pitch was more than impressive. The Spirit scored eight goals against William Jessup last Saturday, putting up its largest margin of victory in a GSAC match.

Two more conference victories are on the line this week when OUAZ leaves the friendly confines of Spirit Field for the first time in over a month. The Spirit will visit Costa Mesa, Calif. for a matchup with Vanguard on Thursday, then head south to see San Diego Christian on Saturday.

OUAZ did not play either Vanguard or San Diego Christian last season, as those two programs played in the GSAC West division during the Spring. The Lions and Hawks finished next to each other at the bottom of the division last season, with Vanguard going 2-4 in conference play, while SDCC posted a 1-5 record.

Vanguard has had a good start to the season, sitting at 5-3-1 and receiving votes in the most recent polls. The last time these two teams faced off was a wild, back-and-forth game that saw the Lions win 6-5 in overtime at Spirit Field.

The Spirit have really found its offense when playing San Diego Christian, outscoring the Hawks 19-3 in the three all-time matchups. OUAZ opened its 2019 conference slate with a 7-2 home win over SDCC, where five different players recorded a goal for the Spirit.

Tom Cohen had another impressive game, putting up two goals and two assists in the win over William Jessup. It is the second time this season he had at least a goal and an assist in a game, and has scored seven goals and seven assists in the past seven games.

Cohen now sits tied for third in the conference for goals, and second in the conference in assists. Right behind him in the assists category is Kebba Jobe, who has six on the season entering the conference series this week.

Freshman forward Jamaine Turner recorded his first career hat-trick on Saturday, pushing him to third on the team in goals. Turner is one of six players to score at least twice for OUAZ, and is one of 15 players to score at least once.

Angel Ramirez has put himself in the record book after the last game, building on his two solid seasons in the net for OUAZ. The four saves Ramirez made on Saturday allowed him to take sole possession of the program's single season (six) and career (nine) shutout records.

Thursday's game against Vanguard is scheduled for 4 p.m., with Saturday's game set to kick off at 2:30 p.m.
