Aliso Viejo, Calif. – OUAZ men's soccer secured a hard-fought shutout on Saturday evening, battling Soka University of America to a 0-0 draw in GSAC action. The Spirit move to 1-6-2 overall and 0-3-1 in GSAC play.
The match featured strong defensive efforts from both sides, as neither team was able to find a breakthrough despite several quality scoring opportunities. OUAZ created some of its best chances during the opening half. Harry Dwelly put a pair of headers on target that forced saves from the Soka goalkeeper, while Zen Courtois also tested the Lions' defense with a shot on goal. The Lions generated pressure of their own throughout the first 45 minutes, earning multiple corner kicks and nearly taking the lead late in the half when a header struck the crossbar. The Spirit defense held firm, however, and the teams entered halftime scoreless.
The defensive battle continued after the break. Riley Fielder and Jesus Castillo each recorded shots on goal for OUAZ, while goalkeeper Jack Murdoch came up with an important save to keep the Lions off the board. As the clock wound down, the Spirit continued searching for a late winner. Dwelly generated another opportunity in the closing minutes, but Soka's defense was able to deny the chance and preserve the draw. Murdoch and the OUAZ back line delivered their first conference shutout of the season, helping the Spirit collect a valuable road result against the Lions.
