OUAZ Rallies to Extend Winning Streak to Eight

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Coming off its crucial win on Friday night, the OUAZ women's volleyball team got off to a slow start on Saturday at The Master's. However, the Spirit was able to turn things around and rally from a 2-0 deficit to earn a 3-2 win and extend their current winning streak to eight straight matches.

The match was tightly contested all day, with two sets going into extra points and another being decided by the two-point minimum before OUAZ (20-2, 13-1 GSAC) earned the 26-28, 22-25, 29-27, 25-19, 15-13 victory.

The Spirit offense carried the way over the final two sets as they totaled 34 kills and only eight hitting errors in sets four and five combined. That led the team to a 77-63 advantage in kills for the match. Behind the .311 and .375 hitting in the fourth and fifth sets, respectively, OUAZ ended the match hitting .192.

Four Spirit players finished in double figures in kills, with Kate Pestova leading the way with a school-record 31 on 82 swings. Her effort included eight kills in the fifth set, including the final five points the team scored. Pestova ended the match by hitting .220 while adding 19 digs.

Livia De Pra added 17 kills, 21 digs, and three service aces. Brooklyn Rainer added 12 kills, and Avie Butsko posted 11.

OUAZ notched a season-high 101 digs and added 11 aces. Valentina Trovato had a team-best 27 digs, and Eve Rodriguez led the team with four aces. Cristal Carrizoza dished out 62 assists while getting 12 digs.

Faith Tarver led the Mustangs with 18 kills.

The Spirit lowered their magic number to clinch the GSAC championship to two with the win. They will step out of conference play to visit Embry-Riddle on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
