Scoreless Tie Keeps Spirit Unbeaten in Conference Play

SURPRISE, ARIZ. - Starting conference play unbeaten is a dream for every team across the country. While the OUAZ women's soccer team accomplished that feat, it was not the way the Spirit were hoping to do it.

OUAZ tied for the second consecutive game on Saturday afternoon, playing to a 0-0 draw against William Jessup. It is only the second time in program history a game ended in a scoreless tie, with the first happening against Hope International during the 2018 season.

Once again, the Spirit created plenty of opportunities offensively, taking 21 shots on the morning. They took three in overtime, and the only two of the second overtime period.

The Spirit also managed to hit the target ten times, making WJU keeper Olivia Foulk work all game. Midfielder Jody Hernandez was not shy about firing the ball, taking nine shots and having three hit the target.

Chloe Gutierrez made four saves on Saturday afternoon for her first full shutout of the season. Prior to Saturday, she accounted for a combined shutout earlier this season to add to her previous two career shutout performances.

The first road trip of the GSAC season will be next for the Spirit, as they head to Southern California next week. OUAZ will match up with Vanguard on Thursday, then head south to take on San Diego Christian on Saturday afternoon.
