No. 19 Spirit Record Rare Sweep at Westmont

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – In what was the biggest match to date in the brief history of the OUAZ women's volleyball program, the 19th-ranked Spirit did something that had only happened one other time since 2014 and recorded a sweep over Westmont at Murchison Gymnasium.

In claiming its 25-17, 28-26, 25-16 road win, OUAZ (19-2, 12-1 GSAC) completed a season sweep of the series against Westmont (17-9, 11-3) and moved closer to clinching a berth to the NAIA National Championship.

Tonight was the first time that OUAZ has recorded a sweep over Westmont in the history of the series. It was also just the second time in the past 80 matches dating back to 2014 that Westmont has been swept at home.

The Spirit would set the tone early with 13 kills in the first set while holding the host Warriors to only four on negative-.042 hitting. Westmont responded in the second set and held a set point before the Spirit scored three straight points to take a 2-0 lead. OUAZ then closed out the sweep with 11 kills and six service aces in the third set.

When it was complete, OUAZ had a 41-27 edge in kills while hitting .177 for the match. They limited Westmont to .135 hitting behind six blocks and 55 digs. OUAZ also was strong at the service line with 14 aces.

Kate Pestova overcame a tough first set to lead the team with ten kills and 14 digs for her ninth double-double of the season. Those ten kills gave Pestova a program record 338 kills this season.

The balance of attackers also showed up on Friday as Chelsea Taylor added eight kills and Livia De Pra and Avie Butsko posted seven kills apiece.

Cristal Carrizoza distributed 30 assists to go with her ten digs and six aces. Taylor added six blocks with Brooklyn Rainer getting five. Valentina Trovato posted nine digs.

Westmont got a team-high eight kills from Lexi Malone.

OUAZ will complete its weekend trip on Saturday when they face The Master's at 2 p.m. in Santa Clarita, California.
