OUAZ Falls in High Scoring Battle Against No. 18 Langston

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The ninth-ranked OUAZ football team had its ten-game winning streak snapped in an offensive shootout with No. 18 Langston on Saturday night at Spirit Field, 44-41.

The top two teams in the Sooner Athletic Conference accounted for over 1,100 yards of total offense and 11 touchdowns.

OUAZ (6-1, 6-1 SAC) led 10-0 after the first quarter behind a Michael Hall 21-yard field goal and a 1-yard touchdown run from Shamar Moreland. After Ger'Kerry Jackson got Langston (7-0, 6-0) on the board with a 40-yard touchdown run, Moreland returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards for his third career kick return touchdown.

The visiting Lions would make the plays from there, outscoring the Spirit 30-10 to build a 37-27 lead with 4:33 to play in the third quarter. OUAZ got back within one score when Austin McCullough connected with Jermaine Trotman Jr. on a 9-yard TD throw with 1:01 to play in the third quarter.

After forcing the Lions to punt on the next defensive possession, OUAZ drove to the Langston 22 before an interception halted the possession. The visitors then used 13 plays to cover 93 yards and run eight minutes, 23 seconds off the clock for another Jackson score.

Not done, the Spirit went right back down the field and capped a 75-yard scoring drive with Moreland's second rushing TD of the game, cutting the deficit to three with 2:09 to play. Langston then converted the first down they needed to run out the clock on its next possession.

OUAZ finished the night with 478 yards of offense and 23 first downs. They were hurt by settling for a field goal on two of the six trips to the red zone. Langston would gain 631 yards at an average of 8.3 yards per play. The Lions also had 14 points from two Spirit turnovers, while OUAZ failed to score from its two takeaways.

Moreland ran for 111 yards and accounted for 324 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns. Marcelous Chester-Riley added 89 yards on the ground with a score.

McCullough threw for 280 yards and one score, completing passes to nine different receivers. Brandon McLaughlin led the pass catchers with five receptions for 114 yards.

Brandon Tomerlin Jr. led the Spirit defense with ten tackles, with Michael Anderson making nine tackles. De'Andre Armstrong picked up his first interception of the season.

The Spirit will now have another bye week before traveling to Plainview, Texas, to face Wayland Baptist on November 6.
