No. 15 Spirit Overcome Slow Start to Win at Wayland

PLAINVIEW, Texas – It wasn't the start they were hoping for on Saturday at Bulldog Stadium, but No. 15 OUAZ regrouped at halftime and pulled away for a 61-30 win over Wayland Baptist on Saturday afternoon.

The team's first four drives – all in the first quarter – featured three turnovers and a punt as OUAZ (7-1, 7-1 SAC) trailed Wayland Baptist (2-7, 2-6 SAC) 3-0 late in the quarter. The Spirit would eventually get a 40-yard field goal from Michael Hall to tie the game late in the first quarter.

Things would change from there as the Spirit scored on nine of its remaining ten possessions – with eight touchdowns – for the third game in four meetings against the Pioneers with at least 60 points. OUAZ totaled 676 yards of offense with 32 first downs.

Marcelous Chester-Riley ran for 128 yards and two touchdowns while Shamar Moreland added 113 yards and a 43-yard scoring run. They are the first Spirit duo to break 100 yards rushing in the same game since the 2019 season. Behind those two outputs, OUAZ finished with a season-high 299 rushing yards.

OUAZ also attacked Wayland with the passing game as Austin McCullough threw for 369 yards and four touchdowns. He completed 69 percent of his pass attempts and connected with eight different receivers. Jack Graham threw for eight yards on two completions.

Jermaine Trotman Jr. was McCullough's top target with eight grabs for 176 yards and three scores. Jordan King caught seven balls for 85 yards.

The Spirit defense allowed 438 yards to the Pioneers, with just 119 coming on the ground. OUAZ had a pair of takeaways while Wayland posted 19 first downs.

Brandon Tomerlin Jr. led the Spirit defense with nine tackles while adding one tackle-for-loss and a forced fumble. David Jones Jr. made six tackles, returned an interception for 26 yards, and had one pass breakup.

With the Spirit's win and the Langston loss, OUAZ moves into first place in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings. They will close out the regular season on November 13 with a home game against Oklahoma Panhandle State.
