Furious Comeback Keeps Spirit Unbeaten in Conference

SURPRISE, ARIZ. – The OUAZ women's soccer team was looking to stay unbeaten at home in conference on Saturday, but was also searching for its first GSAC win at home. While the Spirit stayed unbeaten, they had to put together a furious comeback for its third tie of the conference season.

The Spirit scored the first goal, as Cassidi Calzaretta netted her team-leading ninth of the season in the 20'. OUAZ did not hold onto that lead long, as the Royals tied the contest in the 26'.

Hope International scored less than five minutes into the second half, as Ofelia Sosa Cruz potted her second goal of the game. Trailing 2-1, the Spirit surrendered another goal in the 71', putting the team in a hole with not much time remaining.

OUAZ stayed resilient, scoring twice in the final ten minutes to send the contest into overtime. Jody Hernandez cut the deficit to one in the 83', then drew a foul in the 89' to set up a Cassidi Calzaretta penalty kick to equalize the match.

The Spirit had all the chances in both overtime periods, as they took all six shots and the singular corner kick in the 20 minutes of extra time. Despite the pressure, and playing up a person as HIU's Jazlyn Alvarado received her second yellow by fouling Hernandez in the 89', OUAZ was unable to find the game-winner.

The Spirit will get back on the pitch next week when they travel to Southern California again next week. OUAZ will visit The Master's on Thursday before taking on Westmont on Saturday.
