Wild Finish Leads to GSAC-Opening Draw

SURPRISE, ARIZ. - With ten seconds remaining in the first overtime, the Spirit lined up for a rushed corner, one they were awarded just a few ticks earlier. Mindy Lertzman sent the ball in, a cross that hit the keeper's hands, and dropped across the goal line for a conference-opening victory.

Or so everyone thought.

A whistle in the middle of a wild celebration brought the game back to reality – a foul on OUAZ negated the game winning goal, subjecting the Spirit and the Oaks to another period of extra time. Neither team could find the golden goal in the second overtime as OUAZ and Menlo played an exciting GSAC-opening game to a draw.

The Spirit played a lot of the game from behind, surrendering the game's first goal in the sixth minute. Menlo was able to hold onto that lead until the 66', where a good bounce on a corner allowed Haley Howard to score her second of the season.

OUAZ had plenty of chances all night long, as they finished with 17 total shots, with nine hitting the target. After a wild, back-and-forth 90 minutes, each time took one shot in each of the overtime periods.

Cassidy Samuelson needed just one save to keep her record free from a loss, now at 2-0-1 through her first three starts of the season. Michelle Gonzalez allowed her first goal since September 3 to Howard, but also made eights saves on Thursday night.

The Spirit will get a chance at its first GSAC win of the season again on Saturday when they host William Jessup. Kickoff from Spirit Field is scheduled for 10AM.
