Spirit Stumble on Opening Day

SURPRISE, Ariz. – An 11-hit effort in which all nine starters had a hit wasn't enough as the OUAZ baseball team fell to San Diego Christian 11-7 in the season opener on Thursday afternoon. The game was part of the Coach Calderon Invitational being played in the Phoenix valley this weekend.

Down 1-0 after San Diego Christian (1-0) scored an unearned run in the top of the third, OUAZ (0-1) put three runs on the board in the bottom of the frame. Juan Navarrete delivered a 2-run single with two outs to put the Spirit in front. Calvin Colon-Baez then knocked in a third run on a single to right.

Elijah Celaya made it 4-1 with an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth.

Things turned in the top of the sixth as the Hawks scored six times on just four hits. They took advantage of two walks and two hit batters in the inning to take the lead.

OUAZ answered right back in the bottom of the inning, getting a 2-run single from TD Walker and an RBI single from Griffin Hagen to even the game at 7-7. SDC took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the seventh and they added insurance with two runs in the top of the ninth.

Hagen and Celaya each had two hits for the Spirit. Fernando Lugo picked up a double and Walker scored two runs.

Tanner Fallon took a no-decision in his first start for OUAZ. In 5-plus innings of work, Fallon allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits with five strikeouts. He allowed three of those hits to start the sixth inning and he struck out the side in the fourth inning.

Matthew Wilmot (0-1) took the loss after allowing two runs without giving up a hit in one inning in relief. Anthony Quattrocchi went the final three innings and gave up two runs on four hits with four strikeouts.

"The best thing about today was we were able to get back on the field after 10 months off," OUAZ head coach Tim Montez said after the game. "It was a sloppy game, and we weren't able to overcome our fundamental mistakes or the big six-run inning they put up. We will take some positives  that I saw today and build off those for tomorrow when we see how our guys bounce back."

The Spirit will be back in action on Friday at 1 p.m. when they host Taylor in game two of the team's three-game opening weekend.
