Trojans Pull Away from Spirit Late

SURPRISE, Ariz. – For the second straight day the OUAZ baseball team couldn't make a solid effort from its starting pitcher hold up as Taylor scored 10 times off the Spirit bullpen in a 12-5 win at Texas Rangers Field 3 of the Surprise Recreation Complex.

The game was called after eight innings due to rain.

Gage Johnson was stellar in his first start of the season in giving up two runs on four hits with eight strikeouts. Both of the runs came in the top of the fifth after Johnson gave up a leadoff walk and then consecutive RBI hits.

OUAZ (0-2) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead. Griffin Hagen made it 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run to left-center.

Taylor (4-2) took the lead in the sixth inning and then added three more in the seventh. The Trojans blew the game open in the top of the eighth – the same time the rain really starting falling – with six runs highlighted by the second homer of the day by Jacob Morris.

Battling the rain in the bottom of the eighth, Nathan Tarver hit a pinch-hit 3-run home run to left field in his first collegiate at-bat.

Jared Crockett had a pair of hits – including a double – in his season debut for the Spirit. OUAZ managed just six hits in the game.

Hayden Sandman (0-1) took the loss after allowing one run without a hit and two strikeouts.

OUAZ will close out its opening weekend of games during the Coach Calderone Invitational on Saturday evening when they host Oklahoma Panhandle State at 5 p.m. at Willow Canyon High School.
